Mudmen... sushi... bikeride

So, it's March 31st, and this is when the MUDMEN are in town.  This is going to be a wicked show!  I've totally forgotten about these guys, and i've never been to one of their shows before.

SO in preparation for it, we decided to go out for lunch (Brandy, E and I) to WASABI.  MMMmm... Rory and I went the other day and I was stoked to have some more unagi, or the sake rolls.  But, as fate decided they aren't open for lunch on Saturdays.  So we had to drive across town to get to Sushi Bowl.

So, a salmon roll, 6 pieces of nigiri and a few of Brandy's sushi later we're all VERY FULL... and seeing as we were going to go to Gargoyle's first, and that it is now like 3 hours away... we are going to die.

So I decide to do something about it, I go for a bike ride... just a nice jaunt seeing as I haven't had a chance to use it much since I got it out in teh first place.  I suddenly got a large influx of calls for supply this week... and next week same thing.  As much as I want to go bike riding... I also like to make money to pay off my ever-increasing debt.  So I need to find more time to go blading with Brandy or biking when I get the opportunity.

See you tonigth at Jack's!!

My bike is now out... and it gets cold

So, I finally puffed up enough courage to call the Landlady and ask about keeping my bike under the stairs.  A little of befuddling went on, but after some communication corrections we agreed I could keep it under the inside eastern stairs of the building.

With that I went out, got my coil lock, and then went for a walk to my parent's house to pick up my bike.  Then I biked home... man, I'm outta shape.  It took me a little bit, but I got there.  A little out of breath, but nonetheless I'm ok.

So, onto today where I decide I would bike on to work instead of driving.  The past few days it's been amazing for weather.  It got to +22C the other day.  With that in mind, I figured I'd be ok.  The tricky part was trying to calculate how long it would take me, so I knew when I would have to leave the apartment by.

Morning comes and it's about 8, and I'm geared up to go.  I have my t-shirt on, with my work shirt in my backpack (didn't want to sweat it up).  I put an extra pit-stick so I can rid myself of any funk that builds up while I'm biking.  I've got my palm loaded with tunes and headphones going.  I'm off and BIKING... I'M REALLY DOING IT!  I hope this works, I really need to get into shape.

I get about a few blocks away when I realize that it's not entirely as warm as I thought, and wearing only the t-shirt has been a bad mistake.  Also, wearing gloves would have been a good idea.  My hands are getting pretty chilly, I'm starting wear out by the halfway mark... I'm thinking the whole thing has been a mistake.  But I persevere... nothing comes without a cost.

By the time I get to work, I've down-shifted my gears pretty low as my thighs are getting pretty sore pumping away... I'm debating on new routes to work so I don't have to dodge traffic (but then it's farther... ugh)... I'm out of breath, and I probably smell.

But the plus side is that I've made it about 10minutes.  So not bad.  Should I do this tomorrow?  Do I want to?  Well, physically I don't want to, mentally I'm drained already... but physically I know I need to.  So... on the days I can bike to work (where I don't supply) I will...

wish me luck!

[maybe i should get myself a picture... maybe i'll wait until i get a helmet]

Mandy's new fish.

So, the other day Mandy came home and said "I've made a decision".  Apparently she had been talking for the past while about getting a pet (it's becoming a trend in the Knauff family).  So she went out and bought a mini tank for it.  Now she hadn't decided on actually getting the fish yet, she could return the tank kit.  But still it's a step forward.

So today after she got off work, she asked if we could go to Super Pet to look at the fish.  I must admit I wasn't entirely enthused.  Don't know why we NEED a fish.  But it was pretty cool looking.  Ferret's are cool... there was some neat snakes and geckos.  They even had a "FINDING NEMO" tank with 2 clown fish, a purple fish and a blue fish.  Pretty neat.

So Mandy picked up her pink fish.  I looked at the birds.

Now we have a new pet... it sits on the china hutch where we had some dishes (don't know where those are going yet) and there now floats a yet-unnamed fish.  It's pink... it's apparently a he (female Betta / Fighting Fish are apparently ugly), and Mandy's got some ideas on what to call it and is taking a poll.  Let her know what you think.   I like Chris' "hypoallergenic pet" idea

Done "Simply" Accounting / new Office 2007

Yay... a solid week of typing away to get the walkthrough for the software Simply Accounting is finished.  I took about a week to read they book and doing some research.  Maybe I was set against it as during my research I found that it was sort of a dead program. Nobody was really using it anymore.  I even went so far as to download some stuff on Quickbooks to decide if I was going to do a walkthrough for that instead.

So, the book we've had for this program apparently wasn't so good, so we got another, and got conflicting reports on it.  So I looked at the book and it was pretty .. well not indepth, but there definitely was a lot to the book, and nothing really coherent.  Maybe if you knew something about Accounting it would probably help.  But alot fo the excercises didn't seem to make sense.  Maybe it's my teaching but I expect a learning experience to have practical meaning.  So I set about my task of simplifying Simply Accounting.

So, I read through the book and picked out what was important to learn.  I took the perspective of a person who would be just entering in the information.  So I concentrated on the main transaction of business (and not the accounting stuff).

Took me a while, but it was pretty fun.  Just a lot of typing of minor instructions (you really have to build these walkthroughs for idiots).  But by the end, the 40 page walkthrough I think was done just right.

What was neat was near the end I switched from using Office 2003, to Office 2007.  I didn't think I'd like the new Office because of the BIG icons (what's called the ribbon now).  But When they said they did it to help minimize confusion by reducing the 7 different ways to do 1 thing, they meant it.  It actually was pretty streamlined.  Where a power user like me would go ahead and customize the toolbar all  the time, with the new 2007 you don't have to anymore.  No confusing menus to cycle through, or try to figure out where it is...

Now that I've got my hands on it, and I understand most of it, looks like I should redo my walkthroughs for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.  [tho' I was quite impressed with my Access walkthrough... I hope not much has changed on it]

There wasn't a new version of FrontPage... wonder where it went (apparently integrated with the Exchange server thingie...).

Anyways, my major project at PTC has been finished... I can't remember what Rain said I should do next... It was some more software stuff.  To think since I've been there in the summer, I've done the computers program twice over now, a ton of small lessons, picked out new books for the math numeracy learning and many other IT type jobs... I wonder if it's time for a raise?  heh

PTC dinner

[this blog is actually on time]

So, today, Rain had some of the 'big-wigs' in PTC come in today.  I was a little nervous, because I still feel kind of guilty working there:

 a) because I feel I work there because of a little bit of nepotism

 b) I have a really 'laxadasical' attitude toward working there (i.e. I book off whenever I want so I can work other jobs)

 c) I really don't do a lot of work there

Really, my job there is to just now and again steer the clients to 'stay on track' and answer questions now and again.  Being a high-school teacher, it just doesn't seem like enough.

Anyways, so Tony and the Marys were coming in.  Tony and 1 of the Mary's are from head office (TO), and the other Mary is from the Sault (for those of you not from the North, we pronounce it the 'soo').  I felt a little scared with them there... half expecting one of them to expose me for the fraud I am... if I am one.  But quite the opposite actually.  It felt odd getting praises from them.  I expected Tony to say "you can't have this arrangement anymore..." like the way Sears was.  But instead he just seemed too cool about it...

So, then Tony takes us (Julie, Rain, myself and spouses) + all the Cascade people (case managers for the clients) out to the Keg.  And that was really neat.  Getting to meet some of these people and discussing our jobs.  The weird thing was finding out that I felt like I fit in there.  I haven't really had that kind of feeling since I was working at the 'Shack.  It felt weird thinking that if there were ever an opportunity that I would actually take it.  I took this job so many months ago to just sorta fill the time and make some extra cash.  But I guess that's how these things tend to go, eh?

The St. Patrick's Day Celtic Kilt Crasher

ok... i know, i'm horrible at this blogging thing... never on time and stuff... but sheesh I've got a life outside of the cyberworld...

So, it was year 2 for our Keltic Kilt Crasher (why they needed to have a k for the celtic... i dunno... if there was a k for the crasher, then i'd understand, but then it would be the kkk... which is nothing we want to associate ourselves with).  There was some reticence on some people's parts this year.  Jeff had taken on alot of the planning for it, so people felt out of the loop... now there's probably some errors of communication on both parts, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyways... it went off without a hitch I think.  Sure there wasn't any Guinness or other Irish type beers, but ... for the crowd we gathered (Jeff and Mike did a good job selling it to the University crowd) I don't think it really mattered.   Still, it looked weird having a REDBULL and JAGERMEISTER sort of corner on a St. Patrick's party (I wont' even start on the video dance party aspect).

The Irish Echoes did a good job, from what I could hear.  And the place was PACKED... and I mean packed.  When our band played on the floor it was INSANE.  Literally having to kick people out of the way so we could play.  A little crazy, but good... so here's hoping we really earned some good coin on it.  Mike brought in the Engineers from the University who just had their ring ceremony.  There were tons of people coming in paying the 'at the door' price.

Probably that was the reason I stayed in the back room for the most part of the evening.  Mandy was enjoying herself as well.  She ran into some old friends of hers and an interesting girl named Angel.  Apparently pretty entertaining.  I missed out.

Another reason I hung out in the back was because I was getting ready for the playing stuff.  Besides band playing, we had a sort of inaccurately named quartet to play.  I say inaccurate, because for some reason we called it that a while back, when it was a quartet, but these days it's more of a quintet or sextet... depends.  That was fun.  Some of the guys were pretty drunk, so it was kind of a train wreck, but still... it was fun.  I like 'showboating' in a sense.  Not egotistical, but just having fun playing.

After we were done, Joe and Bryan did a solo thingie on the bodhran as well.  Rory suggested he and I stay close by 'just in case'.  Not that we expected somethign to happen, but essentially Bryan practiced with Joe just once the Thursday previous, so... just in case.  So we did get to play a few more tunes... and that's just fun!

So, here's hoping to see what happens when we get the numbers back from the event... we definitely made more than last year!

I say job well done Jeff.

Mandy's trip to Minneapolis

so I know this is long over due, but better late than never...

I kept calling this trip Mandy's trip... we were visiting her aunt, her mom's friends, her grandmother, etc...

but really we both went on the trip, it was my march break too.  But it's always fun bugging Mandy this way.

Anyways, we set out on Monday after Mandy took her dog into the vet (she's losing her eyesight, poor dog).  My mom had given us some turkey so I made a bunch of sandwiches for our trip.  It was neat having it already made and we just drove.  We didn't stop at all... usually I make breaks in Grand Portage, or Two Harbors... but the gas was ok, and Mandy was so peacefully sleeping, I just drove on.  When we reached Duluth (and subsequently Mandy woke up) we gassed up, picked up the typical "manager's special" and then found highway 35 and drove on again.

It's funny, the road to Duluth is like 3.5 hours, and winding, and changing speeds alot... whereas to Minneapolis it's more like 2 hours, and 70mph all along the way.  But it's funny that the "what should be shorter" trip, seems the L O N G E ST part of the whole ordeal.  Maybe it's just the monotony.

But in 2 hours we were winding our way through 35W and eventually onto American BLVD to our hotel.  Gotta love the fact that mandy gets cheap hotel rates.  So we rested up quickly and then double checked our maps to find the way to Kathy and George's place.  That was pretty funny, we KNEW the way to go, but at the time to make some of the exits we missed 2 of them.  But we still made it there in time.

We had a good dinner with Kathy and George, and we brought them the next installments of Corner Gas (they're huge fans).  We also got to see Hans' pictures from China.  It was pretty neat!  What was even really especially cool was seeing George's tv, and how St. Paul had at least 15 HD channels OVER THE AIR!!!!  That was pretty cool.  (Here we only get 8 if you have the special box.)

The next morning we doubled checked Google Earth so we could figure out how to get to Mandy's aunt Kathy (or is she the Kathy with a C?).  We ahd several options, but we still made it ok... not a problem whatsoever.  I don't know why everybody seems so hesitant to drive in big cities.  Anyways, we had a delightful lunch with her and her son Michael.  Mandy picked up a book on quilting from her as well as a neat mini-quilt like scrapbooking thing.  Then Mandy gave her the Christmas gifts she meant to... (it was funny going over the border and saying we're leaving behind CHRISTMAS GIFTS ... "aren't you a little late for that?)

By then we had to head on to Mandy's grandmother's home.  IT's always so neat there.  And she invited Mandy's aunt & uncle:  Dick & Mary.  Dick's the one who was a war-time reporter for the Korean war.  He wrote a book about his interviews.  It was very interesting (felt horrible when we had to admit we didn't read it yet).  But it was a good visit.

After which, we had to rush to the Mall to pick up some bathing suits (I had forgot mine), so that we could enjoy some of the hot tub (driving 6 hours and more really makes one desire a good tubbing).  That was good, it was nice and hot, just perfect.

We decided after that we should go and tryout the White Castle ... such a let down.  I should write the people who made "Harold & Kumar" movie.  grr...

Then I made some plans to try to find out how to get to Farmington (where the Scottish Games will be held), so that meant some more Google Earth (what a cool program).

A quick jaunt into Farmington reveals a neat little place ... if we go to the games, it looks cool.  But then it's time to head back north.  We stop in Duluth to do a little more shopping.  I found another copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide for work and I found a new book on odd facts and stuff (I always like those kinds).  We decide against Hacienda Del Sol and march on through.  I'm still determined to stop in the Lake Superior Trading Post, but by the time we get there, it's closed.  But I didn't know that and walked in, where I found most of the staff saying "hey, we're closed."  Heh.

Then it was a pretty long wait to get through the border... and then we were home... ready for a good sleep.  Mandy slept most of the way (as per usual)... I kept awake by listening to podcasts.  The hotel room had internet so I was looking for stuff to do when I found that one of the programs I use actually has a type of podcast program.  So I downloaded some CBC radio 3, some Quirks and Quarks, some DNTO (yes, I'm old, I like listening to CBC), and even I found some OLD TIME Radio casts, as well as a PopSci podcast.  Pretty cool.  So I was entertained the whole way down.

Now... to go back to work and get ready for the Kilt Crasher...  don't forget to check the pictures.

Another birthday prank

Everybody loves a birthday... especially a birthday 'prankin.'  None, more than Eilidh and Brandy.

So they received a tip it might be Deb's birthday.  And on the off chance it was probably true they went off in style.

Many balloons, crepe paper, a loser pinata and mini-disco-balls later we had her house pretty well decorated.  [yeah, loser pinata as in it wasn't something you get to hit with sticks... just pull the strings]

I tied balloons to her railing, the disco balls were put in trees, stuffed balloons in between her doors... it was fun.

Even when she came home it was still fun.  We hung out across the street hidden.  She looked upset at first... she got her camera out, we thought she was going to take pictures for her insurance or the charge she's filing with the police.  But she was really just finishing off a roll.

It was a good time.  Several things were learned:

  • In highschool, Brandy prefers 'pom-pom's to balls [what does that mean?]
  • soem balloons look like bad condoms [cheapo chinese]
  • a snowbank can be a good hiding place
  • they make pinatas you don't hit [why would you do that tho'?]

Enjoy the pictures (keep in mind they were my cellphone... very low res)

Rain's trick

[okay, I know I should've posted this before I left, but oh, well... all in good time]

So, after catching that cool movie 300, we went out for a drink at BP.  Rain displayed her awesome new trick.  She unveiled it at our apartment a few days earlier with a teacup, and I meant to take a picture, but I didn't.

So, here it is... Helga will be so proud someday when she sees it!

it's okay, she didn't drinking it

Allergy test over.. look like i've been in a fight with a cutter

So, the allergy testing is over.  I was scratched almost 50 times (45 + 3 controls).  Looked like I had one of those weird Mauri tattoos ('cuz the also wrote on your skin).

But the verdict is in:

SEVERE

  • Cat
  • Rabbit

Major

  • Horse
  • Mouse

Mild

  • Dust mites
  • Molds (shouldn't that be spelt moUld???)
  • Birch Pollen

So besides having scars on my arms that make me look like i should be restrained from doing damage to my person, what did I take out of this?   Well, cat allergen is EVERYWHERE apparently (he tried to scare me with alot of %'s... meh).  So, he recommended I get allergy shots.  But for the amount of times I have a problem, it's just a nuisance.  So he gave me a prescription for reactine eXtra strength and a puffer if i need it.  I doubt I'll really need it.  But for the few times... can't hurt.

What I also found out was why the other stuff I'd been taking didn't work.  He said with an allergy, you'd need 2x the dosage.  So taking only one Aerius isn't enough.  Weird.  He also said that the FloNase my doctor gave me for free probably isn't going to help either.  So, should I chuck them?  As well, turns out that some of the reactions I've had to chemicals in the lab or cleaning the bathroom are more PHYSICAL irritation than a chemical allergy reaction.  Just because I have an allergy makes me more susceptible to the irritation.

Well, my allergies are sorted out... shoulda taken a picture of the scratches, pretty funny looking!

Nobody comments anymore

I used to get a few comments on my blog, or on some of the photos...

It's all dried up now...

I'd have figured the BUNNY SUICIDES would have at least garnered some hatred type comments, but nothing.

Weird.  Maybe nobody reads tehse anymore?

So I'm sick... still.

Yup, you heard right, i'm still sick.  Had a few days going ok there... dont' know what changed, but I woke up this morning with just a sore in the stomach... almost needed to puke... and that feeling persisted for SEVERAL hours... still does.  I did puke once... well once, but it was ALOT.  Without going into detail, I'm wondering if it might have something to do with what i've eaten recently.  Probably not, but you never know.

Now the worst part is that I've just ben sitting around the house today feeling very nauseous.  I feel like one more sick up would help.  But who knows, and I can't seem to force it.  And feelign this way I can' tconcentrate on anything.  Even writing this is an effort.  So i have nothing else to do but feel awful.

The real kicker is Rob D from Westgate saw me the other day and he said I should come out to their 6th period.  They were going to Davinici... it'd be nice to get in with some of that crowd, BUT I CAN'T.  Not without hurling on some people ... then i'd NEVER be able to get in there ever.

This all just seems so wrong... that I've been sick this long... just stringing along for how long now.

Oh, well...
