August 11th - Thor & Hulk say 500 goodbyes to Robin via radio

 One of my all-time, favourite comedians, died by suicide on August 11th, 2014.  7 years gone, and miss the heck out of Robin Williams.

Nanu nanu.

It's also the date that Hedy Lamar was granted the patent for Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum technology - which is what eventually lead to modern day communication use.  No Hedy Lamar, no wifi.

Also, 13 years before that, in 1929, Babe Ruth hit his 500th homerun.  

It took 11 more years before someone achieved that.   And at a career 714 homeruns he's still #3 in history.  

Last, but not least, it's also Chris Hemsworth's birthday.  Thor turns 38.

Or, Hulk Hogan turns 68.

August 10th - S'mores & Lions

 Unfortunately, there's a fire ban on in our region - else I would love to celebrate something of a family favourite treat - the s'more - as it's National S'mores Day.

My trick is that we like to use those celebration biscuits with chocolate layer on it... not exactly 'graham cracker' but it's just perfect.

Also, you don't have to use just chocolate, I do like using those fancy chocolate bars that are like brownies or Reese's in them too... just if you like a little decadence.

Speaking of decadence, there's nothing more kingly than the king of the jungle - and it's World Lion Day.

Sad to find out there are only approxomately 20,000 of them left in the world.

Aug 9th - World Indigenous People, Books and 6.02x10^23

 Canada has it's Indigenous People's Day on June 21, but in 2015 the UN created the "International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples" for August 9th.

One way that you can learn more about the world's Indigenous peoples by reading books - and as luck would have it, it's also Book Lovers Day.

Another thing you can read in a book is some Chemistry, and well, I'm a chemical nerd.  One of my favourite things in chemistry is weird facts - like Avagadro's number:  N_A = 6.02x10²³.  Essentially, the number of 'things' in 1 gram of it or one 'mole'.

You can have a dozen of something - 12 of it.  You can have a baker's dozen - 13 of it.  You can have a pair of things - 2.  You can have a gross - (12 dozen = 144).

You can also have one mole of it, or an Avagadro's number. Have 602,214,141,070,409,084,099,072 of something and you can say you have one mole of it.

The guy they named the number after, was Amedeo Avogadro - who came up with Avagadro's law, saying that for 'ideal gases' there is a constant relation between their volume, temperature and pressure; which eventually led to the ideal gas law - the infamous PV=nRT.

Amedeo would have been 245 years old.

August 6th - Toe Beer

 The first Friday in August is apparently always International Beer Day.

And I hear beer always tastes better when you're outside, some place warm - and if it's warm you're probably taking your shoes and socks off, so let your Toes Free with national Wiggle Your Toes Day

Sometimes this stuff is weird (not a fan of looking at pics of feet... and all I can think of is the bride sitting in Buck's back seat saying "wiggle your big toe").

Aug 5 - World Blogger Day

 I don't know if I need to mention anything bigger on August 5th than it's just World Blogger Day.

That is all.

Okay, it's also National Underwear Day, Work Like a Dog Day, Oyster Day and National IPA Day.

August 4th - Leopards, Louis, Barack and Billy Bob

August 4th - nothing really assuming.  If you're a person who wants to hear bad things, it is the anniversary of the day that Lizzie Borden's parents were found.  Ick.  And it was the day that Anne Frank was found.  Oi.

But, on the international front it is the International Day of the Clouded Leopard -- there are less than 10,000 in the world.

Celebrating the day are also some really influential people: Barack Obama (60), Louis Armstrong (would have been 120 - happy birthday Satchmo)

... and not so influential, and not so much musical is a guy I lost a lot of respect for after he was on Q -- Billy Bob Thornton (66)

August 3 - Watermelon, Brady, Metallica

 After our Ontario long weekend, it's back to work.  Today I'm working in Toronto while I await my father having surgery.

I'll be celebrating his successful surgery alongside these people who hav birthdays Tom Brady (who's 44), James Hetfield (58) and someone who probably has a lot of recipes for National Watermelon Day, Martha Stewart (80).
