There was this song. American Pie - and a line in it about 'the day the music died'. I thought it was just some line.
But, Don McLean was really referencing a point in history when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper went in an airplane ride together and they crashed.
3 big names in music at the time in 1959 was a big loss.
It's also the celebration of Setsubun in Japan - their division day between winter and spring.
So officially it's the day before the first day of Spring. So a time to clean out the evil spirits (by scattering beans) for a new year. Apparently you can have a family member dress as an oni (a demon) and throw beans at them symbolically.
