March 31 - Visibly see Obi in the Clouds

One of the topics I used to love to cover back in the day on my blog was the number of options you had for cloud storage.

Having a space in the ether where you can keep your files, easily accessed by any of your documents.

So many options, and it's recognized today as World Backup Day.

I used to have DropBox, Box, SugarSync, Drive, OneDrive, Copy, ... how do you back up your files?

Obi Wan visited the holocron library, which is probably the biggest library in the Galactic realms - too bad they didn't back that up.

Obi Wan was played by Ewan McGregor, famous Scottish actor who's done some great motorcycle tours as well as defeat a Sith.

He turns 51 years old today.

It was also on this day in 2009 that the transgender community opted to hold an International Transgender Day of Visibility.

March 30 - Hagrid's Heart Goes on in Heaven

 Today is all birthdays.

First up is the Canadian queen - Celine Dion.

She'll be 54.

Then the Scottish actor who played Hagrid.

Robbie Coltrane is turning 72. (did you know he was in Krull?  I often get him confused with the actor from In Bruges)

Last but not least is the most frustrating guy to watch play guitar - Eric Claptopn.

He'll be 77 today.

March 29 - The mommas and the poppas of Confederation tickle the ivory

My line of work I tend to have a lot of (well earned) respect for the owner/proprietors out there.

The US celebrates this with a National Mom & Pops Business Owners Day.

The good ol' neighbourhood always had a small cornershop owned by some other neighbourhood member.  Made for a great community.

A good movie needs a good soundtrack, and sometimes it requires a piano, and it's a good thing it's World Piano Day.

The country I love so dea, Canada had officially received royal assent by Queen Victoria on this day in 1867 to the British North America Act - this document set up the dominion of Canada.

It officially would get enacted on July 1, 1867 - hence we call that Canada Day.

March 28 - A cornetto is so money

You're so money, a phrase that was kinda popular in the 90s thanks to once Vince Vaughn in Swingers.

He was born on this day in 1970, which makes him 52.

That's so money!

Another actor who I've enjoyed their career journey is the one half of the creators of the cornetto trilogy, I mean Nick Frost - he's 50 today.

The cornetto trilogy being Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, but he's done way more moveies than those, even with Simon Pegg.

March 25 - Robert the Bruce Tolkien Waffle

In 1306 the hero Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scots after the amazing victory at the battle of Bannockburn.

It might have made for a good fantasy story, something JRR Tolkien would have written.

Which is apt as today is known as Tolkien Reading Day.

Apparently the day that the ring was destroyed.

So cuddle up to a good book of his and have a nice bit of brunch like a waffle... afterall, it is International Waffle Day.

March 24 - Escaping a Sick Vote

It was on this day in 1837 that Canada provided voting rights to its Black citizens.

It was also the day that one Erik Weisz was born in 1874.

This kid from Budapest grew up to be the amazing Harry Houdini.

A master of illusions most known for his escapism - however I loved how Houdini's side passion was exposing charlatans... those who tried to prey on the greiving with seances and other BS.

That's using your powers for good!

It was also on this day that in 1882 Dr. Koch discovered the the cause of the tuberculosis due to a bacteria TB Bacillus.

Since 1982 they've celebrated the day to help raise awareness.

March 23 - Calculate the Weather for Walkies

I'm a bit of a geek in the fact that I do love math.

Today is World Math Day.

First celebrated in 2007 where it used to be on Pi day.

Now, I remember that one mathematician used calculus to help determine the fluid dynamics in measuring air patterns to help determine the weather.

Sometimes we call these people meteorologists... unless I've got that science all wrong.

Which would be bad as it's World Meteorological Day

Set up in 1961 by the World Meteorological Organization.

And if you're having good weather, what a good day to take your puppy for a walk.  And in the US it's National Puppy Day.

March 22 - Space hockey on clean ice

It was on this day back in 1894 that the first Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 3 team tournament.

And on this day Montreal Amateur Athletic Hockey Club won the tournament.

Such a Canadian thing - and another Canadian foundation is actor William Shatner, who's turning 91 years old today.

He's recently been to space officially.

Who knows that soon we might have to be going to space to go look for clean water.

It's apt that it's World Water Day.

Created in 1993 to highlight the importance of fresh water.  In 2022 the theme is "Groundwater, Making the Invisible Visible".

March 21 - A day for a forest of equal puppets

Wow, a day of just International Days.

First up it's the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Set up in 1966 in memorium of the day in 1960 where South African police opened fire on peaceful demonstrators.

Next up is the International Day of Forests.

Set up in 2012 to show the importance of forests and trees for the benefit of future generations.

Lastly it's World Puppetry Day.

Now this one wasn't from the UN, but rather from the Union International de la Marionnette.

March 18 - Sheelah makes a mean Sloppy Joe

Apparently keeping with the Irish theme this week...

The legend goes that St. Patrick had a wife (or mum) named Sheelah, and the Irish would celebrate a feast on the day after St. Pat's.

Not a super famous day, but ... we'll take any excuse these days.

Whether it was his mom or wife, I'm sure she made St. Patrick a meal or 2, and a nice simple comfort meal of sloppy joes can be anybody's favourite.

Today is the US's National Sloppy Joe Day.

March 17 - Irish Light

This is an easy day to pick something special, especially for those of us who play the pipes.  Interesting that it's a day where they want us to play our Scottish bagpipes for an Irish day.

St. Patrick's Day comes from the fact that today was supposed to be the day that St. Patrick was either supposed to have given a sermon about the shamrock being like the trinity or the day he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland.

It's also the day that in 1905 Albert Einstein published his theory on the "Quantum Theory of Light".

The idea was that when needed, light behaves like a particle, and at other times it behaves like a wave

March 16 - Crickets and the Irish Pandas don't get along

I've been watching a lot of BBC lately and there's this comedienne that I really enjoy - Aisling Bea.

She turns 38 today.

Speaking of funny, the Finnish people also have a good sense of humour - and they've 'invented' their own Patron Saint of Finland, one St. Urho.  Who, like the famed St. Patrick, who drove the snakes out of Ireland, they say Urho drove the grasshoppers out of Finland.

They set up St. Urho's Day to be just before St. Patrick's Day - so today!

People will celebrate the hero by parading around a large grasshopper on a stick.  It's kinda funny.

Far from Ireland and Finland is the home of the panda.  And the US celebrates today as National Panda Day.
