September 14 - The Golden Girls should've had bismarks instead of cheesecake

 When I was a kid, I used to have a paper route, and I remember vividly after we'd go collecting we'd have to go pay the bill at the office and have the left over as my payday.  Walking home with that money we'd go passed a little coffee shop that had donuts and I so remember the bismark, an amazing donut filled with custard.  Just had to have one every time we went by.  mmm.... 

Well, better grab one today as it's Cream Filled Donut Day.

I don't know if it's a national (and which nation), or international... most sites I search just say it's today.  That's enough for me!

Known for their famous"I'll get the cheesecake" snack times, it was 1985 when on this day the first episode of the Golden Girls aired.

Which leads to the question... which Golden Girl are you?

September 13 - The Law & Order of Chocolate Scooby Persian Snacks

 September 13th and I'm back in the office baby... that being said, we're still doing all of our meetings virtually, so I still need these sweet backgrounds.

One of the nice things about being downtown again for work is the proximity to snacks... mm.. I do love chocolate, and it is WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY.

As I think I remarked earlier in this blog, Chocolate Day has many days, but this is recognized by the US Chocolate Confectioners as it's the birthday of Milton Hershey (born September 13, 1857).

As much as I love chocolate, in Thunder Bay, when it comes to snacks you just gotta nosh on a Persian.

So, a "Persian" is a special cinnamon bun style pastry with a strawberry (or raspberry) icing that was invented here - and legend has it - named after a certain Commander John J. "Black Jack" Pershing who visited a local bakery.  Cmdr Pershing was born September 13th, 1860.

Know who else loved a good snack?  Scooby Doo.

A scooby-snack could get him to do anything, and the first episode ever of the show aired on September 13th, 1969, "What a Night for a Knight".

Man that seems like a long time for a show to be on, but we're still watching them today.

Another show that seemed to go on forever, and I just couldn't get enough of it is Law & Order.  The originals... man, now my favourite era has to be Briscoe & Logan.  Great stuff.

It's first episode was September 13th, 1990.  And it spawned off tons of other series too.

September 10 - Should Little Alex Horne host Jeopardy?

 I have absolutely binged watched Task Master on YouTube... man that's a funny show.  And in every episode you get to hear "IT'S LITTLE ALEX HORNE!" as Greg announces his sidekick.

Apparently 'little' Alex is now 43.

I'm older than 'little' Alex Horne?  Ack.  Happy birthday man.

Speaking of Alexes... Jeopard just isn't the same without Alex Trebek.  I had no idea there were hosts before him, but he had his first episode as host on this day in 1984.

1984, wow what a run.

On a serious note, the World Health Organization in 2003 labelled today as "World Suicide Prevention Day".

If you need help, it's not a sign of weakness to reach out.  As well, as friends we could play a role in recognizing signs of mental health and just check in on our friends.

September 9th - Happy watches Sullivan show with his Teddy in French

 Interesting point that about the Teddy Bear... how it came about because President Theodore Roosevelt apparently refused to shoot a bear cub, the cartoon of said event made 'President Teddy' look all soft and cutesy and people wanted a stuff cub - and it was called the "Teddy Bear".

Today, is National Teddy Bear Day.

I'm assuming that's an American thing only.

I never had a teddy bear that I can recall - except I did have a 'Curious George' stuffy as a kid that I took everywhere.  Curious George was almost a goof and I enjoyed that.

Being a goof is something that Adam Sandler does well. The actor known for such goofs as Little Nicky and Happy Gilmore, and probably the star of many a highschool lunch time where I remember sitting in the hallways as friends would play his comedy CDs...

He's 55 now.

A lot of us saw Sandler first on SNL, and another big TV persona was Ed Sullivan, he had a lot of people on his show, but probably none bigger than Elvis Presley back in 1956 on this day.

Elvis up there gyrating his hips for the national audience... I imagine it was pretty scandalous.

Apparently they made sure to try to just film his upper half.  Also interesting - Elvis didn't go to the New York Studio for the, rather he 'remoted in' from a live studio in Hollywood (he was filming a movie at the time) and Ed was also off due to a car accident.

Last but not least... enfin et surtout (that hardly tracks as a word for word meaning...)

In 1969 Canada passed the Official Languages Act, enshrining French as an official language.

I've always tried to better up my French.  It's slow but building.  Just don't try to test me.

September 8th - Let's get this physical therapy started with a book in the final frontier

 In TV history - there's several standout intros to a show, but nne probably more well recognized than when a certain 'Bill' starts out with "Space... the final frontier..."

It was September 8th, 1966 that that phrase was first uttered, and well, for 'trekkies' September 8th is Star Trek Day

I'm not much of a 'trekkie' myself, but I do enjoy the shows.  Not sure I can say I loved the original, but William Shatner was a hoot.  I think I preferred the story line / arc of DS9 more.

13 years later a certain Alecia Beth Moore (maybe we're related) was born.

You probably know her as Pink!

Happy birthday Pink... she's 42 (can't believe I'm older than her).

Now she can't write awesome music without being somewhat well read - as it's also International Literacy Day.

Declared in 1966 (ooh, same year as Star Trek... coincidence?) it is meant to help showcase the importance that literacy for individuals plays - being a 'clear connection between illiteracy and severe poverty'.

And if you sit reading in your favourite chair for too long, you may need to see someone about that posture, as it's also World Physical Therapy Day.

Created in 1996 by the World Physiotherapy group.  Being mobile, means being well.

I know as I age (faster than Pink it seems), I definitely need to see them more and more.

September 7th - Blue Skies & Beer

 It may start to feel like fall is in the air... the temperatures are just not as warm, but there is still plenty of 'blue skies' out there, and it's the UN recognized "International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies"

Adopted in December of 2019 the day is about recognizing efforts and strengthening international cooperation in improving air quality and reduction of air pollution.

Nothing wrong with that.

And what better to enjoy that blue sky than sitting out on a patio or laying in a hammock and enjoying a nice beer.

It's National Beer Lovers Day!

I can't seem to find if it's a national (and which nation) or just one of those "yeah, we'll accept it" kind of days.

September 4th - I betcha Steve loved a good snack

 missed a couple days because I was enjoying some vacation days in Rainbow Falls...

I can't believe it's been 15 years since we learned that the amazing Steve Irwin had passed away.

He was an amazing guy, just really down to earth.

And there's nothign more down to earth than a comfort food snack.  I never knew that this snack I used have now and again as a kid was a 'real snack' and had a real name.

Welsh Rarebit is just cheese on toast.  Can do it many ways, but often is to just put some bread in the oven to toast with a ton of cheese on it.

True, a traditional Welsh Rarebit (cows pobi) is a 'cheese mixture' ... which I guess is the differentiator.  But still, it's very tasty.
