September 29th - Coffee's good for the Heart, right?

Now, this gets awkward.  In Canada we celebrate National Coffee Day today.

Yet, internationally, Coffee Day is Oct 1.  Wonder why there's that difference.

It's also World Heart Day.

What's the linkage there I wonder?

If coffee goes with the heart, you know what goes with coffee?  Biscotti.  Now, I think this may be a US only thing, but it's Biscotti Day

September 28 - I betcha Pierre got a lot of Dumb Questions while drinking beer

Well, last week it was confirmed our new Prime Minister was the same as our old Prime Minister, which is Justin Trudeau.  Justin is the son of another famous Prime Minister, Mr "You Just Watch Me" Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Trudeaumania was a real thing back in the day, and the world lost PET on this day in 2000.

RIP.

When someone passes away, sometimes they hold a wake, a way to remember the good times and enjoy the life that was had, and well... sometimes have a drink.  Which is fine as it's also National Drink Beer Day (in the US, I can't find record of it for Canada).

Slainte!

Drinking a few tends to lead to a few philosophical questions - and I just love shows like "Drunk History".  Which is probably why it's also Ask A Stupid Question Day.

I've always said, there are no such things as dumb questions, only dumb answers.  Which is how I usually respond to those "hey, can I ask a dumb question" ... "only if I can give a dumb answer".

September 27 - William learns new languages while abroad

Way back in 1066 today marked the day a fleet of ships left Normandy for Sussex to begin a Norman invasion of English to help put William the Conqueror on the throne.

They would land in Sussex on September 28.

If you want to go abroad (maybe not during a pandemic) this will be the day to do it as it's World Tourism Day.

Chosen in 1970 by the United World Tourism Organization, go out and see the world!

Then, while you're out and about, you'll maybe want to learn a word or two in the language you'll be visiting.

Translating word for word is hard, and the most famous example of that is the Rosetta Stone.

This stone had a decree posted on it in 3 languages, hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek.  Since it was found in 1799 people had tried to translate it as a way to understand hieroglyphics... the first person to claim success was Jean Francois Champollion on this day in 1803.

Nowadays we have lots of other ways to learn a new language, even an app called Rosetta Stone, but I hear they're douches - so I use Duolingo instead.

September 24 - Troy McClure wasn't a muppet, but I'm sure he could have been

Growing as a kid of the 80s ... wait, didn't I just do that yesterday?  Well, it's a trope that works...

...growing up as a kind in the 80s there are 2 shows I vividly remember, The Muppets and The Simpsons.  2 famous voices from those 2 shows have actors celbrating birthdays.  Unfortunately, both of them are no longer with us.

Jim Hensen would have been 85 today.  His vision of programming and muppets and just use of his range of voice acting really captivated a lot of people.  Not just for the Muppets or Sesame Street, but he did a lot of movies like The Dark Crystal and Labrynth.

Happy Birthday Jim.

Another awesome voice actor and actor was Phil Hartman.  The list of shows he was in (and was awesome in) is so lengthy.  For me, his standout performance was Bill McNeal on NewsRadio, just amazing work.  Oh, and can't forget his Frankenstein on SNL.

Phil would have been 73 today.  Happy Birthday Phil.

Part of being a good voice actor is understanding inflections and punctuation... well it's National Punctuation Day in the US.

September 23 - The Boss plays Nintendo

As a child of the 80s, I grew up just glued to my Nintendo.  I had a book I kept of all my secret codes and tricks.  But, did you know that Nintendo was from the 1880s?  The company was founded in 1889 on this day in Kyoto Japan selling playing cards.

Heck of a transformation.

Another fixture of the 80s was 'The Boss" - none other than Bruce Springsteen, having his breakout years in the 80s.

The Boss is now 72.

It is also Celebrate Bisexuality Day.  Not saying these things are connected.

September 22 - the companion ditches the car for a cage

I'm writing this currently after having driven to work.  I have been trying to bike as much as possible, and although it's not raining, it was very cool this morning, plus I'm exhausted.  I tried to celebrate the World Car Free Day...

...good thing I drove a van instead :D

I'm also writing on this computer thing, which is made possible by electricity, and there are lots of new vehicles which are also electric.

One of the fathers of electricity is Michael Faraday who did a lot of work on electromagnetism, creating dynamos, motors and transformers.  He would have been 230 years old today.

Another explorer of the sciences, well science fiction is the Doctor.  Who doesn't love a good ol' fashion quirky show like Doctor Who.  I first started watching with the 2005 relaunch with Christopher Eccleston, who quickly found a companion (Doctors always love to travel with a companion) in Billie Piper.

She turns 39 today.

Rose was always my favourite companion.

September 21 - Bill's at Peace with Hobbits

The United Nations has set September 21st as the International Day of Peace.

One person who always seems at peace, almost a zen, is Bill Murray.

Man, that person is a treasure.  He turns 71 today.

That man has played it all... Ghostbusters, the masochistic patron at the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, himself in Zombieland... heck, he played Garfield even (I grew up thinking it was him in the cartoon).

One place he didn't act in, but I bet he would've been awesome, was in Tolkien's movies.  JRR Tolkien wrote his book "the Hobbit" in 1937 on this day it was published.

What a sprawling saga, I can't believe how much I just gorged myself on this world of tales.

Bill could have easily played a hobbit, or gollum, even an amazing orc... but man what I wouldn't give to see him as an elf.

September 20 - The Cheese for Sports

For anyone who's ever packed a kids' lunch, you'll know one thing that can go in as a fairly healthy snack that you'll know they'll have is a cheese string.

Well, let them celebrate in style as it's officially National String Cheese Day.

It's a great way to get some nutrition and energy, especially if you're off to play some sports!

It's also the UNESCO's International Day of University Sport.

Speaking of sport, it's also National Coaches Week... so thank a coach.

Someone who had a few good coaches I bet... Guy Lafleur.  First NHLer to score 50 goals in 6 consecutive seasons.

Guy turns 70 today.

September 17 - Tripper's a Patient on MASH

September 17th has been designated as the day to recognize that people receiving health services shouldn't be subjected to either abuse or unsafe practices.

One place where patients were often respected was on the TV show MASH, which aired for the first time in 1972.

I forget often how great a show it was, depicting with humour an absolutely terrible environment.  It balanced that line quite well.

It's also John Ritter's birthday.

He would have been 73 today.  Again another often overlooked actor.  As much as you may know him for Jack Tripper on 3's Company - he was on a bunch of shows and movies (my favourite - Sling Blade)

September 16 - Knope tries to fix the Ozone with Play Doh

It was a hot summer out there.  Climate change is real... One of the first real signs  for it came from the recognition of the depletion of the Ozone layer.

In 2000 the UN created this day to recognize that need for the preservation - the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

Now, since about 2007 the layer has been healing, but that came about because of the Montreal Protocol, which was signed on September 16, 1987 - however, it's no time to let up just yet (it's still about 17 million square kilometres).

Someone who would have fought strongly for change was Leslie Knope, who was played by Amy Poehler on Parks & Rec.

Amy is now the big 5-0 today.

Another thing Leslie would love is play time.  And who didn't play with Play Doh when you were a kid.  Relive your childhood by celebrating World Play Doh Day

Play Doh was initially invented as a wallpaper cleaner back in 1930s, morphing eventually to a toy as they had learned some school teachers making crafts out of it.

Ya just never know where something will end up.

September 15 - Voted to get a lobotomy, now you need some drugs and a double cheeseburger

There's nothing that speaks truer to your rebellious adolescence than wanting a cheeseburger and listening to some punk music.

Today is Double Cheeseburger Day

Because, when you're a teenager and your metabolism is just soaring, why have just one patty when you can have two.

When I was in my teens, I listened to a fair bit of the Ramones.

Jonny Ramone, died on this day in 2004.

End of an era.

Another end of an era was the discovery of penicillin - an antibacterial agent to help rid of certain diseases.

Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming on this day in 1928

A great alternative to the sulfa drugs prior to it.  Tho', the date seems to vary depending on who you talk to.  September 3rd is when he notices it had an effect, and September 28th he was able to conduct an experiment that replicated.  So I imagine some time in between is when he discovered it.

And it seems lately that drugs are quite the political topic.

It's a good thing we live in a democracy then.  To celebrate the UN decided in 2007 to call September 15th the International Day of Democracy.

Speaking of democracy... don't forget to exercise that right and vote on September 20th.

September 14 - The Golden Girls should've had bismarks instead of cheesecake

When I was a kid, I used to have a paper route, and I remember vividly after we'd go collecting we'd have to go pay the bill at the office and have the left over as my payday.  Walking home with that money we'd go passed a little coffee shop that had donuts and I so remember the bismark, an amazing donut filled with custard.  Just had to have one every time we went by.  mmm....

Well, better grab one today as it's Cream Filled Donut Day.

I don't know if it's a national (and which nation), or international... most sites I search just say it's today.  That's enough for me!

Known for their famous"I'll get the cheesecake" snack times, it was 1985 when on this day the first episode of the Golden Girls aired.

Which leads to the question... which Golden Girl are you?

September 13 - The Law & Order of Chocolate Scooby Persian Snacks

September 13th and I'm back in the office baby... that being said, we're still doing all of our meetings virtually, so I still need these sweet backgrounds.

One of the nice things about being downtown again for work is the proximity to snacks... mm.. I do love chocolate, and it is WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY.

As I think I remarked earlier in this blog, Chocolate Day has many days, but this is recognized by the US Chocolate Confectioners as it's the birthday of Milton Hershey (born September 13, 1857).

As much as I love chocolate, in Thunder Bay, when it comes to snacks you just gotta nosh on a Persian.

So, a "Persian" is a special cinnamon bun style pastry with a strawberry (or raspberry) icing that was invented here - and legend has it - named after a certain Commander John J. "Black Jack" Pershing who visited a local bakery.  Cmdr Pershing was born September 13th, 1860.

Know who else loved a good snack?  Scooby Doo.

A scooby-snack could get him to do anything, and the first episode ever of the show aired on September 13th, 1969, "What a Night for a Knight".

Man that seems like a long time for a show to be on, but we're still watching them today.

Another show that seemed to go on forever, and I just couldn't get enough of it is Law & Order.  The originals... man, now my favourite era has to be Briscoe & Logan.  Great stuff.

It's first episode was September 13th, 1990.  And it spawned off tons of other series too.

September 10 - Should Little Alex Horne host Jeopardy?

I have absolutely binged watched Task Master on YouTube... man that's a funny show.  And in every episode you get to hear "IT'S LITTLE ALEX HORNE!" as Greg announces his sidekick.

Apparently 'little' Alex is now 43.

I'm older than 'little' Alex Horne?  Ack.  Happy birthday man.

Speaking of Alexes... Jeopard just isn't the same without Alex Trebek.  I had no idea there were hosts before him, but he had his first episode as host on this day in 1984.

1984, wow what a run.

On a serious note, the World Health Organization in 2003 labelled today as "World Suicide Prevention Day".

If you need help, it's not a sign of weakness to reach out.  As well, as friends we could play a role in recognizing signs of mental health and just check in on our friends.

September 9th - Happy watches Sullivan show with his Teddy in French

Interesting point that about the Teddy Bear... how it came about because President Theodore Roosevelt apparently refused to shoot a bear cub, the cartoon of said event made 'President Teddy' look all soft and cutesy and people wanted a stuff cub - and it was called the "Teddy Bear".

Today, is National Teddy Bear Day.

I'm assuming that's an American thing only.

I never had a teddy bear that I can recall - except I did have a 'Curious George' stuffy as a kid that I took everywhere.  Curious George was almost a goof and I enjoyed that.

Being a goof is something that Adam Sandler does well. The actor known for such goofs as Little Nicky and Happy Gilmore, and probably the star of many a highschool lunch time where I remember sitting in the hallways as friends would play his comedy CDs...

He's 55 now.

A lot of us saw Sandler first on SNL, and another big TV persona was Ed Sullivan, he had a lot of people on his show, but probably none bigger than Elvis Presley back in 1956 on this day.

Elvis up there gyrating his hips for the national audience... I imagine it was pretty scandalous.

Apparently they made sure to try to just film his upper half.  Also interesting - Elvis didn't go to the New York Studio for the, rather he 'remoted in' from a live studio in Hollywood (he was filming a movie at the time) and Ed was also off due to a car accident.

Last but not least... enfin et surtout (that hardly tracks as a word for word meaning...)

In 1969 Canada passed the Official Languages Act, enshrining French as an official language.

I've always tried to better up my French.  It's slow but building.  Just don't try to test me.
